Shiro Named as New Heir

A new Line of Succession was today confirmed by the Senate, with Shiro Mephistopheles installed as the new Heir.

The now Crown Prince Shiro – one of this year’s Consuls – has led the Senate since April, and previously served both in Parliament and in Cabinet.

Upon the ascension of Emperor Aggelos I this Sunday, His Imperial Majesty’s first Imperial Decree called on the Senate to confirm a new Line of Succession.

Prior to this confirmation, Lord Michael Simpson was technically Heir for several days, having been second in line before the new Emperor’s ascension. However, he had previously made it clear that he would not wish to accept the Throne unless entirely necessarily.

Another reason to form a new Line of Succession comes from discussion in the top levels of government regarding prospective constitutional amendments. One of these amendments, which will likely be proposed before the end of the year, would remove the requirement for the Monarch to be a practicing Christian, replacing it with a requirement for the Monarch to respect the national religion rather than to necessarily adhere to it.

Assuming that this amendment passes, the eligibility criteria for Monarch will significantly widen, and so some dignitaries previously not included have been considered by the Senate.

The new Line of Succession now stands thus:

  1. HIH Crown Prince Shiro
  2. Lord William Wilson, Duke of Taysha
  3. Lord John Gordon, Viscount of Thetford
  4. HIM Emperor Adam I of Adammia
  5. Lord Michael Simpson, Count of Occibrazos

The Senate has been empowered to make changes to the Line of Succession – with the Monarch’s approval – since 2020. This function was previously exercised by Parliament itself.

What is the Monarchy? The Austenasian Monarchy is the constitutional institution headed by the Emperor of Austenasia, who serves as Head of State. The Crown represents the continuity and constitutional authority of Austenasia and has formed part of the Empire’s constitutional structure since its foundation in 2008. The office of Monarch is distinct from that of the Prime Minister, who serves as Head of Government and leads the day-to-day administration of Austenasia. The powers and constitutional arrangements of the Crown have changed during Austenasia’s history.
What was the Senate? Under the Constitution of 2011, the Senate was a constitutional body primarily responsible for holding the Monarch accountable and was separate from Austenasia’s legislature. Established in 2018, it exercised powers relating to matters including regency, treaties, constitutional amendments and the line of succession. Legislative authority was separately exercised through Parliament and the House of Representatives. This institution should not be confused with the present Senate established under the Constitution of 2026, which serves as Austenasia’s legislative body and succeeded to functions formerly vested in the House of Representatives.
What was Parliament? Parliament was the legislative branch of Austenasia under the previous constitutional system. It was a unicameral legislature whose representative house was the House of Representatives. Under the Constitution of 2026, Parliament and the House of Representatives ceased to form the legislative structure, with legislative functions instead exercised by the present Senate.
Historical line of succession The Line of Succession described in this article is no longer current. Austenasia’s succession arrangements have changed substantially since this article was published. Under the Constitution of 2026, the reigning Monarch may nominate an heir subject to confirmation by the Senate; if no nomination is made, the Senate may elect an heir. Who is Aggelos I Augustus? Aggelos I Augustus was the fifth Emperor of Austenasia, reigning from September 2024 until June 2025. He succeeded Jonathan I Augustus on 29 September 2024. His reign ended during the constitutional crisis that followed his attempt to call an early general election, an action held by the Austenasian Government and Parliament to be unlawful under the General Elections Act 2020. Aggelos was subsequently deposed, beginning the Austenasian Interregnum. The monarchy was restored with the accession of Johannes Karl I Augustus on 25 July 2026.
Austenasia and Adammia Austenasia does not currently maintain friendly relations with the Empire of Adammia. The two nations were formerly close diplomatic partners and cooperated extensively for several years. Relations deteriorated during the Austenasian political crisis of 2025 and subsequently broke down. The present Austenasian Government does not regard Adammia as a diplomatic partner. Historical articles concerning Adammia may therefore reflect a substantially different relationship between the two nations.
